ABOUT
SOUND CARDS
/Sɑʊnd Kardz/ are your ticket to a world of lively word games and engaging language challenges. With all 44 sounds (phonemes) in the English language represented in the 54-card deck, each card represents a specific sound that can be combined with the sounds on other cards to form words or even sentences. The sound connected with each card is identified through (1) the sound’s symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) (e.g., /tʃ/); (2) a phonetic respelling of the sound based on the symbols used by Dictionary.com and other widely used online dictionaries (e.g., /ch/); and (3) the various spellings of the sound (graphemes) in English (e.g., tch). The bolded grapheme at the middle bottom of each card represents the most common spelling of the sound (e.g., ch). Consonant cards are in black and vowel cards are in red. With exactly 26 consonant and vowel cards each, this unique deck was designed not only to allow you to enjoy novel takes on classic card games but also to offer you the chance to create games, activities, and challenges of your own. The deck can be used by gamers, readers, and students of nearly all levels and ages—and for those who already speak or are learning English.
