Five Card Drawl
Objective: To draw a hand that beats the hands of the other players (or to get them to fold through bluffing).
For group play.
Mix the cards (including the two wild cards).
The dealer deals five cards to each player face down, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
The players place bets.
Each player can discard up to three cards and receive a corresponding number of cards from the dealer.
The players place another round of bets.
If two or more players remain after the second round of betting, they reveal their hands. The player that has the highest hand wins the pot. If only one player remains, that player automatically wins the pot. The hand rankings are as follows:
A hand that uses all five cards for one word.
A hand that uses all five cards, with four cards used in one word and one card used in a second word.
A hand that uses four cards in a word.
A hand that uses all five cards, with three cards used in one word and two cards used in a second word.
A hand that uses four cards, with three cards used in one word and one card used in a second word.
A hand that uses three cards in a word.
A hand that uses three cards, with two cards used in one word and one card used in a second word.
A hand that uses two cards in a word.
A hand that uses one card in a word.
A hand with the greatest number of consonant cards.
Notes:
Players should declare their own words and winning and losing hands are based on this declaration (subject to verification) and not on any words that players might have missed in their hands.
In the event of a tie, the hand with the fewest number of played graphemes wins.
As words can be pronounced differently depending on accent and dialect, there can be more than one way to transcribe a word phonetically. Thus, players should agree in advance on how to resolve questions about acceptable respellings. For example, they might chose to consult Dictionary.com or another dictionary of their choice for standard phonetic transcriptions of words.
