Objective: To figure out the hidden word or phrase by guessing the sounds.

For group play (or a teacher- or parent-led game for one or more guessers)

  1. One person (the “host”) comes up with a word a phrase, spells the word or phrase phonetically using the cards, and lays the cards face down in their proper order.

  2. Those playing the game guess which sounds are in the word or phrase. If a sound is correctly guessed, the host turns over that card revealing the sound. Play continues until the word or phrase is solved.

Possible variations: This game can be made easier by having a phonetics chart or second deck of cards that the guessers can consult, and it can be made more challenging by limiting the number of guesses players can make.

Note: Consider having two decks on hand in case a sound is needed more than once. Further, as words can be pronounced differently depending on accent and dialect, there can be more than one way to transcribe a word phonetically. Thus, the host might consult Dictionary.com or another dictionary of their choice in advance to ensure they are abiding by standard phonetic transcriptions.
